Workforce Recruitment and Retention Plan
Strategy Two of the WCPSS 2001-2002 Strategic Work Plan is
to "Improve the district's ability to recruit and retain
a high quality workforce." This is the action plan designed
to achieve this goal.
Objective I. Maintain pay and benefits at competitive levels.
- Increase the Teacher Salary Supplement.

- Improve support staff salaries including designation
of emergency positions that require salaries beyond
the mid point to be competitive.
- Offer one-time signing bonuses to certified teachers
in selected critical areas payable in two equal installments
in December and May.
- Reimburse and/or pay vendor for new employee required
health examinations.
- Provide free tuition for children of employees who
attend WCPSS.
- Continue to provide supplement advancement for new
teachers with three years or less experience.
- Reimburse teachers for first time PRAXIS Test fees
though December 1, 2001.

Objective II. Build a culture of professionalism and learning.
- Provide free Praxis preparation seminars to assist
new teachers meet NC licensing requirements.
- Provide two days of release time for 2nd and 3rd
year teachers to complete their portfolio performance
based product for DPI.
- Provide release time for mentors to assist 2nd and
3rd year teachers to assist with portfolios.
- Provide one day of release time for ILT coordinators
to conduct area reviews of performance based portfolio
products for submission to DPI.
- Coordinate training and limited fee assistance to
encourage teachers who are pursuing NBPTS certification.
- Pay a one time honorarium for teachers who complete
NBPTS certification.
- Increase tuition reimbursement funds for lateral
entry and provisionally licensed teachers to help
offset the cost of coursework required to clear their
licenses.
- Provide a salary and benefits statement for all
employees.
- Provide electronic resume tracking and on line application
functionality.
