Hello Spartan families!  This is Elaine Hofmann, principal of Salem Middle School with several updates and reminders.

Please make sure you have our 4th Annual Military Appreciation Night marked on your calendar for next Tuesday night, October 17th at 6 pm in our cafeteria.  It is a great night celebrating those in our families as well as in our communities that have sacrificed so much to keep our democracy alive and well.  We are inviting all students, staff, and their families to this event.  We will honor those families who have military connections (active, inactive, or retired) in any branch of the military (Army, Marines, National Guard, Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force, Merchant Marine, or other). Join us for a time of appreciation and connection.

    We plan to have:

    • Our colors presented by our Salem NJROTC members
    • Performance by Aryana and Lexi Figueroa (two members of our Salem Blue Notes choir)
    • Talk by Commander Gregory Erickson, United States Navy (Retired)
    • Music of each Branch of the Military.  (Honorees stand when their service song is played)
    • Snacks and decorations provided by Salem Middle PTA
    • Connection Time...getting to know each other

Just a reminder that next Friday, October 20th is an Early Release Day.  Students will be dismissed at 12:30.  It is also Track 3’s last day before Track out.  Track 4 comes back on Monday, October 23rd.

I am hosting a Coffee Talk with the Principal on the morning of Friday, October 20th from 7:30 - 8:15 am.  I believe in a strong school to home connection as well as an open line of communication. This will be an opportunity for us to talk about things going on here at school as well as an opportunity for you to bring your questions, ideas, and concerns to me in a more intimate and face-to-face setting. Hope to see you there!

Don’t forget about our STUCO Dance on Friday, October 20th and our PTA sponsored Movie Night on Friday, October 29th!  Permission forms for both events can be found on our website as well in the front office.  Each event is $5 and concessions will be sold at both events as well.  All information for both events are on our website.

Our Salem website is your go to site for all information about Salem Middle School.  To get a glimpse of all of the great things happening during the school day, you should follow me on Twitter @SalemPrincipal or search #SalemProud.

    Warm Regards,

    Elaine Hofmann

    Hello Spartan Families!

This is Elaine Hofmann, principal of Salem Middle School with several updates and reminders.

    8th Grade students and Parents!

Please come out tomorrow night, Tuesday October 3rd for a night full of information on two very special high school choices our 8th grade students have for next year.  Hear from reps from Wake Early College of Health and Sciences as well as Wake NC State University STEM Early College High School.

Quarter 2 has officially begun today!  Quarter 1 Report cards for Tracks 1, 2 & 3 will go home with students this Friday, Oct 6th.  Track 4 report cards will go home with students their first Friday back from track out.

Fall Sports updates - we are in full swing with all of our fall athletic teams.  Our next home football game is this coming Thursday afternoon starting at 4 pm.  Entry to all athletic home games are $5.

STUCO Dance -Salem’s Student Council is holding our 1st dance of the year on Friday, October 20th from 6 - 8 pm.  All Salem MS students are welcome to attend. The cost of the dance is $5 and refreshments/concessions will also be sold.  This dance is a fundraiser for all hurricane victims both near and far!  Permission forms are required for entry into the dance.  These forms can be found on our website but can also be picked up in the front office.

Salem’s 1st Movie Night! Our PTA is hosting our very first movie night on Friday, October 27th.  The theme is Halloween of course and the movie Goosebumps will be showing.  All Salem MS students are welcome to attend. Open the Movie Flyer with all of the information!

Huge shout out to our fabulous PTA for providing the best bag lunch at this past Friday’s Early Release.  We needed bagged lunches so that we could all get off campus quickly and make it to our scheduled tour of the exhibit, Race: Are We So Different, at the Museum of Natural Sciences.  If you haven’t had a chance to view this exhibit, I highly recommend it!  It was a great professional development experience for the entire staff!  It also confirms that even adults still appreciate field trips!  :)

It was great seeing all of our Track 1 students back in school today!

Hope you all have a fantastic week,

    Elaine Hofmann

Good afternoon Spartan Families!   This is Elaine Hofmann, #SalemProud principal of Salem Middle school with several updates and reminders.

Tomorrow, Thursday, September 21st is a regular school day for Tracks 2, 3, & 4.  I know there has been a little confusion with traditional schools having a workday tomorrow.  We will be teaching and learning all day tomorrow!

Next Friday, September 29th, is an Early Release day.  Students will be dismissed at 12:30.

Track 1 returns to school on Monday, October 2nd.

1st Quarter ends for Tracks 2, 3 & 4 on September 29th.  All grades will be due that day.  Please remind your students that they should be checking with their teachers about make up work.  This is a great time to start encouraging your children to develop their advocacy skills and having them check with their teachers!  Report cards will go home for Tracks 1, 2 & 3 on October 6th and on October 27th for Track 4.  Grades are always available on PowerSchool!

Hopefully, you all received a memo from Dr. Merrill, our Superintendent, regarding Social Media threats and our schools that was dated August 31st.  I would just like to take this time now to remind and reemphasize that having conversations with your students about their use of social media is so critically important.  Our middle schoolers are just beginning to get their feet wet in this big new world and just like we wouldn’t throw our beginning swimmers into the deep end without a lifejacket or support, we don’t want to throw our children out onto the world wide web without instruction and close supervision.  Please see our counseling and student services webpage on the Salem website under Our School for a ton of resources on cyber safety.

Let’s continue to work together as we teach our students to show PRIDE everyday.  P - Positive Words and Actions, R - Responsibility for Self, I - Integrity and Honor, D - Display Self-control, and E - Excellence in Everything!

Have a great rest of the week!

Hello Spartan Families and happy Friday!

Here are several updates and reminders from Salem Middle School.

Happy Labor Day!  No School for all tracks on Monday, September 4th.

    End of Quarter reporting changes:

    • Track 1 ends their 1st Quarter on September 8th!  All year-round schools are changing the way they have traditionally distributed report cards.  We will no longer give report cards on the last day of the quarter.  Instead, we will be collecting grades from 1st quarter all of the way through to the end of 1st quarter.  This means that grades won’t be finalized until Track 1 teachers track back in and report cards will not be distributed until October 6th in homeroom.

    • Tracks 2,3 & 4 will end their 1st quarter on September 29th.  Tracks 2 & 3 will receive their report cards on October 6th.  Track 4 will receive their report cards after they track back in, on October 27th.

    • Please see your team websites for further information about this change!

Track 1 will track out on September 8th.  Track 2 comes back on September 11th.

    Carpool updates:

    • Thank you to all families who are following our carpool procedures which include: dropping students off or picking them up only around the carpool loop.  Again, dropping students off or picking them anywhere else including the parking lot, elementary school, Wake Zone, etc. is just not safe.  Dropping students off in the bus loop is permitted after 8:05 when the majority of our buses have already come through.
    • Thank you for helping us keep your students’ safety our number 1 priority!

Here Comes the Bus!  WCPSS Bus App:

    PSAT Update:

    • Students who have completed high school North Carolina Math 1 are eligible to take the PSAT on October 11. Registration information was sent home September 1 and payment is due by September 8 for tracks 1,3 and 4 and by September 13 for track 2.
    • Please contact Cindi Baker, AIG teacher if you have any questions.  Email is: chbaker@wcpss.net

    Happy Friday afternoon Spartan Families!

Here are a couple of important updates and reminders.

Welcome back Track 3 on Monday!  We are looking forward to having you back with us.  Track 2, have a great track out and we’ll see you on Sep’t 11!

Just a reminder to all, especially for those who haven’t experienced Salem when we are at full capacity… the next 3 weeks we will be bursting at the seams with 3 full tracks in session.  This means specifically for parents that carpool is longer both in the mornings and afternoons.  Please plan accordingly!

    Solar Eclipse reminders:

Please talk to your students about the importance of eye safety during the eclipse on Monday.  Here are a couple of resources that our teachers have put together and have been sharing in some of their classes.  I thought they were worthy of sharing with you all as well!

    Eye safety during the Eclipse

Here are a couple of other resources:  the following articles from the Washington Post, Sciencing and Scientific American explain why it can be harmful to look at the sun during a solar eclipse.

Students will be dismissing from school shortly after the peak of the solar eclipse here in Apex.  It is extremely important that you remind your students that they should never look directly at the sun during this time unless they are wearing their protective glasses.  Students should always double check their glasses for scratches and punctures before they put their glasses on to view the eclipse.

**We will be holding students in the building until their bus or their ride is in the bus/carpool loop if they don’t have glasses.  So please understand this and prepare for this change in dismissal procedure for Monday only.

**We will not be allowing students to walk to Wake Zone on Monday as well.

If you choose to check your student out early on Monday, we will be allowing students to come down at the time you pre-coordinate with them so that we can expedite the checkout process.  All absences for reasons related to the solar eclipse will be excused.  We will be conducting a modified schedule that day so they will not miss any instructional time after 12:50.

Don’t forget the waiver!  Here is the link, and here is the link in Spanish.  We will have extra waivers in the front office if you do need to stop by and sign one on Monday.  Without this waiver your child cannot go outside!!

I think that is all for now… Bring on that eclipse, we are ready!!!

    Have a great weekend!

    Regards,

Elaine Hofmann, Principal of Salem Middle School

    #SalemProud

  • Principal's Message - August 17, 2017 - Solar Eclipse Update

Posted by Elaine Hofmann at 8/17/2017

    Hello Spartan Families!

I just wanted to send out a quick Solar Eclipse update.  It has been quite an eventful and rollercoaster of a week.  My heart is full... I have seen a village come together this week for the benefit of our students.  Between the tips we got from parents about where approved glasses were still available, the extreme generosity of several of you, and just determination and grit, I now have NASA certified approved glasses in my possession for each grade level and track!!  Every Salem middle school student who has a signed WCPSS waiver form will have the opportunity to go outside and view this once in a lifetime phenomenon!

If your child plans on being in school on Monday and if you would like your child to participate, it is imperative that they have the WCPSS waiver signed.  Please make sure you child returns this waiver to their teachers by Monday!   Here is the link to the waiver, and here is the link to the waiver in Spanish.  All students will be involved in indoor solar eclipse activities if they are not able to participate outside.

Don’t forget the sunscreen that day!!  :)

    I am such a #SalemProud Principal!

    Thank you,

    Elaine Hofmann
